Painted!

We painted the Pearl in Spinnaker White and 1956 Ford Sunset Coral.

I really like the way she came out.  We'll be adding the running lights, break lights, wings, etc. tomorrow.  I'll post more then.  Exhausted....

  4. Hi,
Love The Pearl! Can I ask what brand of paint you used?

  5. Thanks! We are itching for the weather to warm up so we can use the Pearl again. I purchased automotive paint online at TCP global: http://www.tcpglobal.com/restorationshop/

The pink under the z stripe is a 1956 Ford Sunset Coral. The cost of the paint for all supplies, white paint for the top and the custom Ford paint for the bottom was $446. But that included the reducers and hardeners that you need with automotive paint. The white was a standard color that they carry, so it was cheaper. The pink is custom mixed.

The people at TCP global are incredibly helpful. We had never used a sprayer (we borrowed it from a friend) and we did not know what we were doing. They told us exactly what we would need, considering the temperature outside and the fact that we were doing this outside. I'm very happy with the results.

  6. Thanks for getting back to me! How many gallons did you use? Thanks for the site reference, I love how they offer the complete kits. Looks like it comes with "the hardener", but what "a reducer"?

  7. The reducer is added to the paint at the same time as the hardener. Its function is to thin the paint so that it comes out of the sprayer evenly. There is a specific ratio of paint/harderner/reducer. TCP recommended the specific hardener and reducer that I needed (again, we were clueless). The kit came with the reducer and the hardener, along with paint strainers and wood mixing sticks. We ordered 1 Gallon of the 1956 Ford Sunset Coral acrylic urethane and 2 gallons of the Spinnaker white acrylic urethane (which came in kits. Each kit included 1 quart of reducer and 1 quart of hardener. Also, we purchased one quart of hardener and one quart of reducer to go with the Sunset Coral (since it didn't come in a kit). However, we didn't end up needing the second gallon of the Spinnaker white, so we could have eliminated that kit. I did find that I was glad to have the extra quart of reducer though because it was great to use on the sprayer to clean it up. TCP offers other options, we chose the acrylic urethane because we wanted a hard, shiny finish - like a car, but without having to do a clear topcoat. I really liked working with TCP - I must have kept them on the phone for a half hour with questions and they were very knowledgeable and helpful. Good luck with your paint!
